SAN ANTONIO, TX – Two teenage brothers faced a judge in juvenile court today, accused in the tragic murder of 14-year-old Simon Cuevas, who was killed while walking home from school in April. The teens, aged 14 and 16, recently turned themselves in and appeared separately before Judge Jackie Valdez.
The 16-year-old brother, who surrendered on August 14 following the issuance of an arrest warrant, was the first to appear. The court heard how Simon Cuevas was reportedly ambushed, beaten, and fatally shot near Brewer Academy. Fernando Flores, 18, has been arrested in connection with the case, while another suspect, 20-year-old Cesar Tijarina, took his own life prior to arrest.
The defense requested the older teen’s release with electronic monitoring, citing the need for fairness. However, the prosecution opposed the motion due to the gravity of the alleged crime. Judge Valdez sided with the state, deciding that the teen should remain in detention.
The younger brother’s hearing revealed claims by his mother about ongoing threats and attacks against him while in custody. Despite these concerns, he expressed a desire to return home and for normalcy to resume. Nonetheless, the judge ordered his continued detention.
Both brothers are scheduled to return to the juvenile justice center for another hearing in 10 days, where their future legal status will be further assessed.
This case has captured public attention, not only due to the young ages of those involved but also because of the violent nature of the crime and its impact on the community.
