Two teen stepbrothers found dead at local swimming spot

SPRINGVALE, ME – In a heartrending incident in Maine, two teenage stepbrothers, 17-year-old Tavayne Weir and 16-year-old D’andre Graham, tragically drowned at a popular local swimming spot known for its 30-foot cliff jumps. The boys had informed their parents of their plans to visit the Springvale Recreation Area and were reported missing after failing to return by their 10 p.m. curfew on Sunday.

The Sanford Police Department, assisted by the fire department, found the boys’ vehicle but initially saw no trace of the teens. However, after an extensive search, the bodies of Tavayne and D’andre were discovered underwater, about a quarter-mile from the cliff, holding onto each other in a poignant testament to their bond.

Major Matthew Gagne of the Sanford Police Department explained the complexity of the recovery operation, noting the visibility challenges and the river’s mild current which could have influenced the location of their discovery. The circumstances of their entry into the water remain unclear, with no witnesses to confirm whether the teens were jumping or swimming at the time.

The community has been deeply affected by the loss of these young lives. Matt Nelson, Superintendent of Sanford Schools, conveyed his condolences, emphasizing the district’s commitment to supporting the students’ families and friends during this difficult time.

A GoFundMe page has been created in order to cover the funeral expenses of Tavayne and D’Andre. The page shares touching details of their relationship, describing them as inseparable brothers who shared numerous activities and had aspirations of becoming delivery drivers to support their family.

The incident has underscored the inherent risks of popular but potentially dangerous recreational spots, prompting calls for increased safety measures and public awareness to prevent future tragedies.
