Two officers shot at an Atlanta train station

ATLANTA, GA – A tense situation unfolded at a MARTA station when a police officer was shot while attempting to address a public disturbance. Officer Carlos Williams was injured after confronting a man suspected of urinating in a public area. The suspect, identified as Christopher Daniels, retaliated violently, firing six shots, one of which struck Williams in the arm.

The incident escalated quickly, with Daniels managing to flee the scene. He was later apprehended three hours away in Alabama, following an intensive manhunt across the Southeast. Officer Raven Thomas was also present during the confrontation and sustained a minor injury when a bullet grazed her knee. She has since been released from medical care.

Police Chief expressed relief that both officers are expected to recover fully. The altercation highlights ongoing security concerns at local transit stations, despite a reported decrease in violent crime, with robberies down 13% and aggravated assaults down 32%.

The MARTA system has witnessed several violent incidents this year. On January 3, a driver was fatally shot at a station, and another deadly confrontation occurred on May 2. These incidents have prompted increased law enforcement presence and stricter enforcement of nuisance violations, such as public urination and smoking.

Chief has called for legislative changes to prohibit carrying firearms on public transportation, emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures. Despite the legal allowance for firearms on transit, the chief believes stricter regulations could prevent future violence.

The suspect, Daniels, who resides outside Atlanta, is believed to have used the transit system to evade capture initially. The reasons behind his flight to Alabama remain unclear.

The police presence remains strong at MARTA stations, with officers working to ensure commuter safety. Neither officer involved in the recent shooting discharged their weapon during the incident.
