NEW YORK CITY, NY — Two men were fatally shot Friday night inside Howard Playground in Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighborhood, prompting a double-homicide investigation as police searched for information about who opened fire and what led to the violence.
New York City police responded to reports of shots fired at about 10:23 p.m. Sept. 11 at the playground near Mother Gaston Boulevard and Glenmore Avenue. Officers arriving at the scene found a 33-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the neck and a 35-year-old man who had been shot in the chest and ankle, according to police accounts reported Saturday.
Emergency medical workers took the 33-year-old victim to Interfaith Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The 35-year-old man was taken to One Brooklyn Health-Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center and was also pronounced dead. Authorities had not publicly identified either man as of Saturday morning, pending notification of their families.
Police had announced no arrests and had not released a description of a suspect. Investigators also had not disclosed a possible motive or said whether the two victims knew each other. No reliable account available Saturday morning established what happened immediately before the gunfire or whether either man was specifically targeted.
Howard Playground is within the Howard Houses public housing complex in Brownsville. New York City Housing Authority planning documents place the playground near Mother Gaston Boulevard and Glenmore Avenue, alongside residential buildings and other neighborhood facilities. The area is served by the NYPD’s 73rd Precinct, which covers Brownsville and Ocean Hill.
The shooting adds two deaths to an area where police statistics had already shown an increase in killings compared with the same period a year earlier. Through Sept. 6, the 73rd Precinct had recorded five murders in 2026, compared with three during the comparable period in 2025, according to the most recently reported precinct data. Friday night’s deaths occurred after that statistical reporting period.
Authorities had released few additional details by Saturday morning. Police had not publicly said how many shots were fired, whether a weapon was recovered or whether surveillance footage or witnesses had provided investigators with a description of anyone involved. Those details remained part of the continuing investigation rather than established findings.
The victims’ identities, the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the identity of any suspect remained unknown publicly as detectives continued investigating the deaths. No arrests had been reported as of the latest available updates Saturday.
