On Thursday, two men were injured in a disorganized baseball bat and pickaxe fight. The disagreement took place inside an apartment building in Yesler Terrace.
The victim, a 24-year-old man, was walking out of the building around 4:30 p.m. when another resident, a 45-year-old man, shoulder-checked him and accused him of making negative remarks about a family member.
A pickaxe was held by the suspect and he gestured as if he were going to swing it at the victim.
In response, the victim retreated to his unit, armed himself with a baseball bat, and attempted to exit the building again. As he approached the suspect in a stairwell, the suspect began swinging the pickaxe at him.
The suspect fractured the victim’s arm with the pickaxe during the fight. The victim’s arm was fractured by the impact.
During the fight, the victim swung his bat at the suspect, hitting him in the head. As the suspect fell, his pickaxe slipped from his grasp and fell to the ground. There is evidence that the suspect’s head has been struck by either a pickaxe or a stair step, resulting in significant injuries.
In the aftermath of the fight, the suspect returned to his apartment where officers found him lying in a pool of blood on the bathroom floor.
There was medical aid given to both men invovled. A hospital guard is currently guarding the suspect, who is currently receiving ongoing treatment at Harborview Medical Center.
