Police are investigating gunfire early Sunday at Hidden Gem Restaurant on West Nine Mile Road.
SOUTHFIELD, MI — Two people were killed and a third person was injured in a shooting early Sunday at a Southfield restaurant, according to police, who said there appeared to be no continuing threat to the public.
Southfield police responded at about 3:33 a.m. Aug. 9 to a report of shots fired at Hidden Gem Restaurant, 16000 W. Nine Mile Road. Officers arriving at the business found a man with apparent gunshot wounds. He died at the scene, authorities said. The names of the people killed had not been publicly released in reports available early Monday.
Two other people who were involved in the shooting made their own way to a hospital, according to police. One of them had been shot multiple times and later died from his injuries. The third person suffered a graze wound, received treatment and was released from the hospital.
Police had not announced an arrest or publicly identified a suspect as of early Monday. Authorities also had not released an official account of what caused the shooting. Southfield police said the investigation remained active and that there appeared to be no additional threat to the public.
A Hidden Gem staff member told WDIV-TV that the restaurant is sometimes used as a private lounge and event space after normal hours. The staff member said two men who knew each other encountered one another before an argument began and gunfire followed a short time later. Police had not publicly confirmed that account or announced a motive.
The shooting led to the building being closed Sunday. The property also contains other businesses, including shops, salons and offices. People who arrived later in the day found they could not enter while authorities continued their investigation.
The shooting occurred along West Nine Mile Road near Ascension Providence Hospital. Police did not immediately release additional information about where inside or around the restaurant the gunfire occurred, how many shots were fired or whether investigators had recovered a weapon.
Authorities also had not disclosed the ages of the victims or explained whether anyone else was inside the restaurant when the shooting occurred. No criminal charges had been announced. Police continued to seek information as investigators worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the gunfire.
The Southfield Police Department said the investigation remains ongoing. As of early Monday, authorities had reported two deaths and one person treated and released after suffering a graze wound, with no additional public threat identified.
