Police arrested Joshua Preston after gunfire at Brittany Place Apartments left two men dead and a juvenile with a non-life-threatening injury.
LAGRANGE, GA — Two men were killed and a juvenile was wounded Monday night in a shooting at a LaGrange apartment complex, where police later arrested a suspect and charged him with two counts of malice murder and other offenses.
LaGrange police responded to Brittany Place Apartments at 1235 Hogansville Road after receiving reports of multiple people shot late Monday, Sept. 7. Police said the shooting happened inside an apartment, and investigators were working Tuesday to determine the circumstances that led to the gunfire. Authorities have not publicly announced a motive or detailed the relationships among the people involved.
Officers arriving at the complex found Drevion Brewer outside an apartment building with an apparent gunshot wound. Brewer was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators determined that the shooting had occurred inside Apartment 922 and entered the residence to search for additional victims.
Inside the apartment, officers found Amarious Williams suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, according to police. Williams was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. A juvenile who had been shot once in the leg was also located in the area and taken to a hospital for treatment. Police said the juvenile’s injuries appeared to be non-life-threatening.
LaGrange Police Chief Garrett Fiveash said several people had gathered inside the apartment before the shooting. According to his account, one person stepped outside to call 911 after another person began acting erratically. Gunfire started afterward. Police have not released further information explaining what prompted the confrontation.
A nearby resident, Clay Pierce, told local television reporters that someone came to his door seeking help after the shooting. Pierce said he found the wounded juvenile and provided aid while first responders were on their way. His account offered a glimpse of the immediate response at the complex but did not establish what led to the shooting.
Detectives with the LaGrange Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division identified Joshua Preston as a suspect and took him into custody. Police said Preston was charged with two counts of malice murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The charges are allegations, and they do not constitute a finding of guilt.
Police said additional charges could be filed as investigators continue examining the case. Authorities had not released further information Tuesday morning about a possible motive, the suspect’s relationship to the victims or the events immediately preceding the gunfire.
The investigation remained active Tuesday. Police were continuing to seek information about the shooting while the juvenile victim was expected to recover from the leg injury. No additional suspects had been publicly identified.
