Two Killed in Virginia Workplace Shooting, Suspect Also Dead

A third employee remained hospitalized in stable condition after the shooting at a United Rentals facility in Manassas.

MANASSAS, VA — Two workers were killed and a third was wounded Wednesday after a co-worker opened fire at an equipment rental business in northern Virginia, authorities said. The suspected gunman later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a pursuit and standoff with Virginia State Police.

Manassas police identified the suspected shooter as Marvin Grant, 37, of Charlotte, North Carolina. Police said Grant was an employee at the United Rentals facility on Wellington Road where the Sept. 30 shooting occurred. Authorities initially launched a search for Grant after he left the business, but the manhunt ended later Wednesday after state police encountered him more than 100 miles away along Interstate 81.

Police received a report of a shooting at the United Rentals facility at 7:11 a.m., according to information released by Manassas authorities. Officers from the Manassas City Police Department and Prince William County Sheriff’s Office arrived within minutes and found three wounded men. All three were taken to hospitals. Two later died, while the third remained hospitalized in stable condition.

Police identified the two men who died as Ricky Lamot, 48, and Christopher Serrano, 33. Authorities had not publicly identified the surviving victim as of Thursday. Manassas Police Chief Douglas Keen said investigators believe an altercation took place before the shooting. The exact motive remained unclear.

Grant left the scene before officers arrived, police said. Investigators used information from his cellphone to trace his movements toward Harrisonburg and alerted Virginia State Police. At about 8:20 a.m., state police were told to watch for Grant and his vehicle as authorities believed he could be traveling through the Rockingham County area.

A state trooper later spotted Grant’s vehicle traveling south on Interstate 81 in Augusta County, according to Virginia State Police. The vehicle entered a rest area near mile marker 232, where troopers attempted to stop it. Police said Grant got out of the vehicle but then returned to it and continued south, leading troopers to pursue him.

Grant eventually stopped near mile marker 227. Virginia State Police brought a tactical team and negotiator to the area during the resulting standoff. At about 10:30 a.m., Grant suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said. He was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead. State police said troopers did not use force during the encounter.

The law enforcement response temporarily disrupted traffic along Interstate 81 in Augusta County. The shooting also prompted security precautions around the Manassas scene earlier in the day, including measures at a nearby school. Those restrictions were later lifted as authorities determined Grant had left the area.

United Rentals said in a statement that it was aware of the incident at its Manassas branch and was working with law enforcement while providing support to affected employees. Investigators continued reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including what led to the confrontation at the business.

The deaths of Grant and two employees ended the immediate search for a suspect, but Manassas police said the investigation into the workplace shooting remains active. Authorities had not announced a confirmed motive as of Thursday, and the third employee was reported to be in stable condition.
