CHICAGO, IL – An early morning shooting at 31st Street Beach in Chicago claimed the lives of two people on Friday, according to the police. The incident, which occurred in the beach’s parking lot, resulted in multiple arrests.
The police responded to a call about a shooting at 3:19 a.m. in the 3100 block of South Lake Shore Drive. On arrival, they discovered a 23-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman who had been shot multiple times. Both of them were pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial investigations indicate that the male victim was involved in a firefight with multiple individuals. As a result, several men were apprehended, and investigations are ongoing, police said.
This double homicide comes as the second deadly shooting at 31st Street Beach in two days and the third shooting near a Chicago beach in less than a week.
On Wednesday evening, a 22-year-old woman was killed, and a 20-year-old woman was injured in a shooting that took place in the beach’s parking lot. The police have yet to arrest any suspects in connection with this incident.
On Monday, gunfire near the 63rd Street Beach led to hospitalization of a 14-year-old girl and two others. A man fled the scene on a bicycle after firing the gun, police reported.
During a Tuesday press conference, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling called the city’s gun violence “unbearable and unacceptable.” Snelling pointed out the tragic young age of many victims, stating, “We are losing our children.”
Chicago’s gun violence has left 127 juveniles injured this year alone, 17 of whom have died, according to Snelling. He stressed that the situation, despite being improved from the previous year, remains unacceptable.
