Two Injured In Shooting Outside Downtown Boca Raton Bar

Police said the suspect fled after gunfire outside The Standard near Mizner Park.

BOCA RATON, FL — Two adults were shot early Monday outside The Standard Cuisine & Cocktails in downtown Boca Raton, police said, sending both victims to local hospitals and leaving detectives searching for the person who opened fire.

The shooting happened just after 12:30 a.m. outside the restaurant and bar at 187 SE Mizner Blvd., near Mizner Park, according to Boca Raton police. Officials said the gunfire came from outside the business, but they had not released the victims’ names, their conditions or details on where they were struck as of Monday.

Police said the suspect fled after the shooting, and detectives were still working to identify that person. The events that led to the gunfire remained under investigation. No arrest had been announced, and police had not said whether they had recovered a weapon or identified a motive. The case drew attention because it unfolded in a busy downtown area known for restaurants, nightlife and late-night crowds.

By midday Monday, visible signs of the shooting remained at the scene. A bullet hole could be seen through a window at The Standard, and blood was visible inside the bar. Residents and people working nearby stopped to look at the damage during the Memorial Day morning hours. Former Florida Atlantic University student Jack Agar said the bar is popular with students and young adults. “It’s really crazy to see something happen around here,” Agar said.

The Standard sits in a downtown plaza close to Mizner Park, one of Boca Raton’s main shopping, dining and entertainment districts. The area normally draws foot traffic from restaurants, bars, offices and nearby homes. Nearby business owners described the plaza as quiet and said the shooting was unexpected. Jim Furlong, co-owner of Boca Bagel Bar, said the scene was jarring when people arrived Monday morning. “It was definitely surprising,” Furlong said. “You walk in in the morning and see something like this.”

Boca Raton police have released only a limited account of the shooting. Officials said two victims suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to a local hospital. They did not say whether the victims were inside or outside the business when they were hit, whether they knew the shooter or whether the gunfire followed an argument. Police also had not said how many shots were fired or whether more than one person may have been involved.

The investigation was assigned to Boca Raton police detectives. Officials said they were reviewing what happened before the shooting and working to identify the person who fled. Detective Desidera was listed as the investigator handling information from the public. As of Monday evening, police had not announced charges, a court date or a timetable for releasing more details.

The shooting added a police presence to a downtown area that was otherwise moving through a holiday morning. People walked past shattered glass and marked damage while businesses nearby opened for the day. Furlong said he hoped the violence would not keep people away from the plaza. Police did not announce any ongoing threat, but they continued to treat the case as an open investigation.

As of Monday, the two victims remained hospitalized, their conditions had not been made public and the suspect had not been identified. The next major step in the case is a police update on the victims, the suspect search or any charges tied to the shooting.
