FLAGSTAFF, AZ – A somber procession of first responders made their way to Flagstaff on Monday, honoring two Timber Mesa firefighters who tragically lost their lives in a head-on collision while on duty Sunday night.
Randy Chevalier, Chief of the Timber Mesa Fire and Medical District, expressed deep sorrow for the loss of his colleagues. “I cherish each of our firefighters and hold this community close to my heart,” he said.
Chevalier recounted hearing about the devastating crash near his home late Sunday evening. “It was a head-on collision with extreme damage,” he described. “In my career, I’ve seen many accidents, but this was horrific.”
Upon arriving at the scene, Chevalier discovered that the victims were 31-year-old Brenna Kulikowski and 21-year-old Damon Thompson. Kulikowski had dedicated three years to the department and was known for her exceptional skills and compassion. Thompson was nearing the completion of his first year and had long aspired to be a firefighter.
“Damon was a remarkable firefighter,” his parents shared, noting his lifelong ambition to serve.
The Timber Mesa community is reeling from the loss. “We’re hurting,” said a fellow firefighter. “There’s a lot of uncertainty and pain as we navigate this tragedy.”
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating the cause of the crash, which also claimed the life of the other driver involved. The identity of this individual has not yet been released.
In the wake of this tragedy, a fundraiser has been launched to support the Kulikowski and Thompson families, as the community rallies to provide comfort and aid.
