Tragedy strikes Georgia football week after Championship win

In a statement Sunday, Georgia football coach Kirby Smart addressed the heartbreaking tragedy involving two of his team members.

A car accident in Athens, Georgia, early Sunday morning claimed the lives of Devin Willock, 20, and Chandler LeCroy, 24. Two other members of the team were injured and are in stable condition.

Smart said in a statement that “we are all heartbroken and devastated by the passing of Devin Willock and Chandler LeCroy.” He was a great teammate and a joy to coach. A valuable member of our football staff, Chandler brought a great attitude and energy every single day. We are grieving with their families and will do everything in our power to support them.”

A SUV carrying Willock crashed in Athens around 2:45 a.m. local time after leaving the roadway and striking two power poles and several trees, according to police.

Willock died at the scene, according to FOX 5 Atlanta, and LeCroy, who was driving, died in the hospital, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The redshirt sophomore from New Milford, New Jersey, played in every regular season game for the Bulldogs, including the SEC Championship and the College Football Playoff.

On Saturday, Georgia celebrated its most recent national championship.
