Police were searching for the shooter after gunfire struck two men and a woman standing outside Tuesday evening.
DETROIT, MI — Three people were hospitalized after someone in a black SUV opened fire during a drive-by shooting Tuesday evening on Detroit’s east side, police said.
Officers responded about 7:15 p.m. July 21 to the 11000 block of Whithorn Street after the city’s gunfire-detection system registered shots and several people called 911, according to police. Investigators said the victims were standing outside when the SUV passed and someone inside fired at them.
The victims were two men and one woman, all in their 30s, police said. Each was struck multiple times and taken to a hospital for treatment. One of the men was listed in critical condition. The other man and the woman were reported in serious or stable condition in separate initial accounts.
Police had not released the victims’ names as of Wednesday. Authorities also had not announced an arrest or provided a detailed description of the person who fired the shots.
Investigators described the vehicle as a black SUV. It was not immediately clear how many people were inside, which direction it traveled after the shooting or whether police had recovered surveillance video showing the vehicle.
Authorities had not released a possible motive or said whether the victims appeared to have been specifically targeted. Police also had not disclosed what happened before the SUV approached the group.
The shooting remained under investigation Wednesday as detectives worked to identify the vehicle and the person responsible. Additional information about the victims’ medical conditions had not been released.
