Prosecutors say 74 spent casings were found after gunfire broke out near a family picnic.
BROOKLYN PARK, MN — Three men have been charged after a May 24 shootout at Oak Grove Park, where prosecutors say 74 shots were fired near a parking lot and pavilion while families were still inside the park.
The case has drawn concern because the gunfire erupted in a public park on a Sunday evening, with bystanders nearby and at least one occupied vehicle caught in the crossfire. No injuries were reported, but court records say multiple vehicles were hit and people ran or ducked for cover as two groups exchanged shots.
The charged men are Beyan Sekou Kanneh Jr., 23, of Brooklyn Park; Kevin Harris Morris, 18, of Brooklyn Park; and Alvin Woyah Gee, 23, of Blaine. They face felony weapons charges tied to reckless gunfire and a drive-by shooting allegation. Police said officers were called to Oak Grove Park, 10251 Zane Ave. N., at about 7:50 p.m. after 911 callers reported hearing 30 to 50 gunshots. Brooklyn Park Inspector Matt Rabe said the gunfire was mainly in the parking lot and that no one was injured. Investigators later said the number of recovered casings showed even more rounds had been fired than callers first reported.
According to criminal complaints, officers found 74 discharged cartridge casings in several parts of the park. Twenty were found in the northwest corner of the parking lot near a vehicle that had been struck. Fifteen more were found in the southwest corner near two other vehicles that also had been hit. Another 39 casings were found under or near a pavilion where a family picnic had been taking place. One witness told police he saw two groups firing at each other, with one group in the parking lot and another firing from across the area. Court records say a Jeep with people inside had its glass shattered during the gunfire.
Investigators said surveillance video showed Kanneh, Morris, Gee and a fourth unidentified man arriving in a Nissan Rogue before the shooting began. The video showed people nearby ducking and running as gunfire broke out, according to the charges. A caller also reported seeing gunmen leave the park in a silver Toyota Camry and a black Jeep. Another caller reported a black SUV crashing into a tree near the park entrance. Police have not said whether the fourth man seen in the video has been identified or charged. The complaints describe the shooting as a gun battle between two opposing groups, but do not list a motive.
Police said witnesses saw three men run into the woods after the shooting and onto the Rush Creek Trail System. Officers searched the trail and found Kanneh, Morris and Gee. When officers approached, Kanneh told them he had a gun in his waistband and handed over a Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun, according to court records. Officers said Gee had two Glock handguns, both with extended magazines. One magazine was empty, and another had 21 rounds with one round in the chamber. Gee had a permit to carry a handgun, investigators said. Police said the men’s clothing matched images from park surveillance video and witness photos.
A family at the pavilion told police the three men came out of the woods after the shooting stopped and asked whether the family was OK. The men then appeared to adjust guns in their waistbands before walking onto the trail, according to the complaints. The scene was part of a busy Memorial Day weekend for Brooklyn Park police. From late Friday through Monday night, officers responded to at least four shots-fired calls in the city, along with a robbery, a stabbing, an attempted ammunition theft and a search for carjacking suspects. The Oak Grove Park case was the only one in that weekend summary that later led to the three park shooting charges.
Kanneh, Morris and Gee were arrested May 27 after officers executed search warrants. They were first held at the Hennepin County Jail on enhanced allegations of reckless discharge of a firearm in a park. Formal charges followed in Hennepin County District Court. Court records show the men face dangerous weapons counts tied to firing at or toward an occupied vehicle or building and reckless discharge of a firearm within a municipality. All three later were released from custody, according to local reports. Their next court appearances are scheduled for late June.
The case now sits with prosecutors as investigators continue reviewing video, witness accounts and evidence from the park. Police have not reported any injuries, and officials have not announced an arrest for the fourth person described in court records. The next milestone is the late-June court calendar for Kanneh, Morris and Gee.
