Teenager dies in dangerous surf

HAMPTON BEACH, NH – A tragic incident unfolded over the weekend as a 17-year-old boy drowned while swimming in the turbulent waters off Hampton Beach. The boy, identified as Younes Crouch, ventured into the ocean despite warnings from his father about the dangerous conditions. The family is devastated by the loss, describing Younes as a bright and ambitious young man.

Younes’ father explained that he had cautioned his son against swimming due to the rough surf, which was a result of Hurricane Erin churning miles offshore. Despite the risk, Younes was determined to enjoy the water. When the situation quickly deteriorated, his father made a desperate attempt to save him, but it was too late by the time first responders arrived.

Lifeguards and emergency personnel were on high alert following the incident. The beach was under red flag warnings, indicating hazardous conditions, and lifeguards were actively monitoring the area. However, they are only on duty until 5:30 p.m., and the incident occurred around 6:45 p.m. when the father and son found themselves struggling about 50 yards from shore.

New Hampshire State Beach Patrol Chief Murphy praised the efforts of lifeguards and firefighters, who responded swiftly to the emergency. He emphasized the importance of adhering to safety warnings and swimming only when lifeguards are present, particularly during such hazardous conditions.

The large waves and rip currents were attributed to Hurricane Erin, which, though far from the coast, had a significant impact on the surf at Hampton Beach. The beach remained under cautionary advisories, with officials urging visitors to exercise extreme caution.

Younes was remembered by his family as a devout Muslim who loved playing soccer and had aspirations of attending university in the U.S. after completing high school. His family and friends mourn the loss of a promising life cut short.

Despite the tragedy, first responders reported that the weekend was relatively safe, with most beachgoers heeding the warnings and guidelines provided by lifeguards.
