DEER PARK, TX – A 16-year-old boy’s heroic actions during a carjacking have left a community in awe. The teenager, William Hammond, was shot while trying to protect his mother from an armed suspect, who was later apprehended after a high-speed police chase.
The incident occurred on July 23 as Hammond and his mother were closing their establishment, I Heart Mac and Cheese. As they prepared to leave, a man brandishing a gun approached and demanded that Hammond’s mother get into the car. Without hesitation, Hammond attempted to fend off the attacker with a glass bottle, resulting in him being shot in the chest.
Hammond managed to flee despite his injuries, while the gunman stole the vehicle and sped away. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Matthew Hubbard, led police on a chase that concluded with a crash on Creek Bend Drive in southwest Houston. Hubbard now faces several charges, including aggravated assault and robbery.
A nearby worker and Hammond’s stepmother provided immediate assistance, applying pressure to his wound until medical help arrived. Hammond was airlifted to a hospital, where he is now recuperating.
Hammond’s mother expressed profound gratitude for her son’s bravery, stating that his quick actions likely saved her life. The family is relieved that the suspect is in custody and that Hammond is on the mend.
