OMAHA, NE – A high school in Omaha, Nebraska, was thrown into chaos when a 14-year-old boy shot his 15-year-old classmate on Tuesday. This recent incident has further ignited the already inflamed issue of gun violence in American schools.
The Omaha Northwest High School became the scene of the terrifying incident around 12:25 p.m., leading to an immediate lockdown of the campus and neighboring schools. Although the victim had initially been critical after being transported to a nearby hospital, the Omaha Police Department’s Deputy Chief, Sherie Thomas, confirmed later that he had been stabilized.
The 14-year-old suspect was apprehended approximately thirty minutes after the shooting. The alleged shooter had been pursued off school premises before being caught.
Students were allowed to leave their classrooms around 1:30 p.m. after the lockdown was lifted. An Omaha Public Schools announcement confirmed that by 3 p.m., a majority of the students had reunited with their families at the school.
Gov. Jim Pillen expressed his gratitude to local and state law enforcement for their prompt and decisive action, both in securing the scene and apprehending the suspect.
Adding to the tense situation, merely days ago, a 14-year-old boy named Colt Gray allegedly shot dead two students and educators at Apalachee High School located in northern Georgia. Jaylen Prince, a 16-year-old student, also allegedly shot and killed a 15-year-old classmate in a school bathroom in Maryland.
