Teen boy killed, teen girl wounded at block party

Police say gunfire erupted on Hickok Lane late Saturday during a large gathering.

HOUSTON, Texas — A teenage boy was killed and a teenage girl was wounded when shots were fired into a large crowd gathered on the 3800 block of Hickok Lane near Cloverland Park late Saturday, Nov. 29, according to Houston police.

Authorities said patrol officers responded around 11 p.m. to reports of gunfire and a chaotic scene in the Sunnyside area, where dozens of people had gathered for what witnesses described as a block party. Investigators with the Homicide Division are leading the case. The girl, 15, was hospitalized in stable condition after being shot in the leg. The boy, also a juvenile, was shot in the stomach and later died at a hospital. No arrests were announced Sunday as detectives worked to piece together who fired and why. Police said they were collecting video and interviewing attendees who remained at the scene after the crowd scattered.

Officers arriving on Hickok Lane found people running, cars leaving, and shell casings on the street, police said. “We were met with a large crowd,” Lt. Ali of the Houston Police Department said at the scene. He said officers located the two wounded teenagers and secured the area for medics. Both victims were taken by ambulance; the girl’s condition was described as stable overnight while the boy did not survive his injuries. Detectives said early information indicated the gathering had swelled to a large size and was possibly promoted as a neighborhood block party near the park. The exact number of rounds fired and the type of weapon used had not been released as of Sunday afternoon.

Police did not immediately release the boy’s age or identity, pending confirmation by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences and notification of relatives. Investigators said they had no suspect description or vehicle information to share and were reviewing any recordings captured by partygoers and nearby security cameras. Lt. Ali said detectives were trying to determine whether a dispute led to the shooting or whether someone fired indiscriminately into the crowd. The girl who was hurt is 15 years old, according to police. Detectives also planned to canvas homes up and down Hickok Lane and check the park area for additional ballistic evidence.

The shooting unfolded in Sunnyside, a residential section of southeast Houston bordered by Scott Street and several neighborhood parks and schools. Late-night gatherings in public spaces often draw large crowds on weekends, and investigators said the party near Cloverland Park appeared to have attracted many teenagers. In recent months, Houston-area investigators have handled several violent incidents connected to large parties where crowds quickly formed and dispersed, complicating efforts to identify shooters. Police emphasized that in fast-moving scenes like Saturday’s, the first minutes are critical to securing medical aid and preserving evidence before witnesses scatter.

As of Sunday, police said the case remained an active homicide investigation. The boy’s cause and manner of death will be determined by the county medical examiner. Detectives were expected to return to the 3800 block of Hickok Lane to canvass for additional video on Sunday evening. Investigators also plan to pull nearby traffic and license-plate camera data for potential leads. No charges had been filed, and officials said any decision would come after detectives identify a suspect and present the case to prosecutors. Police said they would release the victim’s name once next of kin is notified and would provide an update if a suspect description becomes available.

Neighbors described the aftermath as tense and quiet on Sunday, with vehicles moving slowly past the park and fragments of police tape still tied to poles. Officers maintained a presence while detectives spoke with residents who remained in the area overnight. “It was a lot of people out here,” Lt. Ali said, noting that the size of the crowd made early witness accounts difficult to sort. By midday, only a few markers from the initial processing remained on the street while families came and went from nearby homes.

By late afternoon Sunday, police had not announced any arrests or identified a suspect. Detectives said they expect to share the victim’s identity after family notifications and to brief the public again if new video or witness accounts clarify what sparked the gunfire. The next update is expected as soon as investigators complete the initial round of interviews and evidence collection.
