DELAND, FL — U.S. marshals arrested a 17-year-old Wednesday in connection with the shooting deaths of two childhood friends found at an industrial property near downtown DeLand, authorities said.
Keyan Jayden Rundell of DeLand was apprehended early Wednesday in Ellenton, a Manatee County community about 140 miles southwest of DeLand. He was wanted on two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Dustin Rose, 19, and Samson Campbell, 18. The charges are allegations, and Rundell has not been convicted.
Members of the U.S. Marshals Service Florida/Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force made the arrest, according to authorities. Officials had not released further details about the apprehension by midday Wednesday, including where in Ellenton Rundell was found or whether anyone else was with him.
The arrest came less than a day after the DeLand Police Department publicly identified Rundell as a suspect and announced that a warrant had been issued. Police described him at the time as armed and dangerous and asked the public not to approach him. Authorities also offered a reward for information leading to his location or arrest.
Police were called shortly before 11 p.m. July 29 to a vacant industrial property on West New York Avenue, near the Athens Theatre. Officers found Rose and Campbell with multiple gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, according to police accounts.
Rose and Campbell had known each other since childhood. One of their mothers located them after tracking a phone to the property, according to local news reports. Police have not released a suspected motive or explained what evidence led investigators to identify Rundell.
Rose was a student at The Citadel in South Carolina and served in the South Carolina Army National Guard. Campbell had been living in the Chicago area before returning to DeLand. Relatives said the friends had gone out together before they were reported missing.
The DeLand Police Department previously said the victims’ families deserved justice and urged anyone with information to contact investigators. Police have not announced whether they are seeking additional suspects or whether a weapon has been recovered.
Authorities were expected to provide additional information during a news conference Wednesday afternoon. Rundell’s detention location, initial court appearance and legal representation had not been publicly confirmed as of midday.
