BROOKLYN, NY – In a devastating accident in Brooklyn, authorities charged a 12-year-old boy with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, and possession of a weapon. He received these charges after the untimely death of his 14-year-old cousin. The unfortunate event occurred while the boys were together in their Brownsville housing project, and their grandfather was asleep nearby.
The victim, Jasai Guy, sustained a shot in the chest from a shotgun. The shotgun reportedly belonged to his father, a firefighter who was on holiday at the time of the incident.
The younger boy admitted to police officers when they arrived at the scene that he had shot his cousin accidentally. The 12-year-old expressed fear that his cousin might die as a result of his injuries. Jasai was rushed to the Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center to receive treatment, but the injuries proved fatal, and he ultimately passed away.
While the shooting is believed to be inadvertent, investigators are looking into how the boys got hold of the weapon and whether it was legally owned.
Known as a smart, “good kid” who loved basketball and avoided trouble, Jasai’s untimely death has sent shockwaves through his community. The incident highlights the critical need for secure storage of firearms, particularly in a household with children.
