BERWYN, PA – A Chester County teacher faces a slew of charges, including engaging in a sexual relationship with a student and providing him with drugs, sparking a stern warning from local authorities about the importance of parental vigilance. The district attorney emphasized the critical need for parents and guardians to monitor their children’s use of digital devices and social media apps.
Michelle Mercogliano, in her first year of teaching at Conestoga High School, reportedly initiated inappropriate contact with a student via Snapchat shortly after the academic year began. According to court documents, Mercogliano, who previously worked in elementary education, allegedly used the app to communicate with the student before the relationship escalated.
Concerns arose among the student’s family, prompting the local police to take swift action. Investigators say that Mercogliano would frequently meet the teenager behind an apartment complex near the school, from where they would travel to Phoenixville. There, she allegedly acquired medical marijuana, which they smoked together before engaging in sexual activities.
The victim disclosed to police that most of their encounters occurred at a home in Malvern. The investigation gained momentum when authorities were alerted to the allegations on a Monday night, and by the next morning, Mercogliano’s cell phone was seized. During the police interview with the student, Mercogliano was allegedly still messaging him.
The district attorney cautioned parents about the risks associated with giving children smartphones, highlighting that some apps are designed to erase messages shortly after they are sent. This adds a layer of complexity to monitoring children’s online interactions.
Though a warrant is out for Mercogliano’s arrest, she has not yet been arraigned due to an emergent medical issue, according to her attorney. Officials confirmed this situation and stated that once she is medically cleared, she will be taken into custody, with prosecutors seeking a high bail reflecting the gravity of the charges.
The school district has cooperated fully with the investigation and placed Mercogliano on leave as soon as the allegations surfaced. The district attorney reiterated the importance of parents not only monitoring their children’s online activities but also being attentive to conversations they have with peers that might raise red flags.
