Serious Negotiations In Congress On Gun Law Reform

Serious Negotiations In Congress About New Gun Law After Texas School Shooting – ABC News

Bipartisan negotiations are underway on a new gun law in the wake of the Texas school shooting.

Nineteen children and two teachers were killed after a gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on Tuesday. Ten years after the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, Sen Chris Murphy, who represents Connecticut, is still advocating for gun law reform.

After the Texas school shooting, Murphy gave an impassioned speech on the Senate floor calling for legislative action on gun violence. “What are we doing?” he asked his colleagues, adding, “There have been more mass shootings than days in the year.”

Murphy (D) hopes that this time is different. He says more Republicans are interested in talking this time.

Illinois Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R) says raising the age of gun purchase to 21 is a no-brainer and that he is negotiating with Republican senators on a package of gun control measures.

Kinzinger, an Air Force veteran and current member of the Air National Guard, changed his mind about gun control measures after seeing too many mass shootings.

Some states have passed gun control legislation in recent history in the wake of mass shootings. Florida’s Republican-led legislature and then-Republican Gov. Rick Scott passed a law after the  Parkland High school shooting, in 2018, that raised the minimum age to purchase a long gun to 21 and improved background checks.

Adam Kinzinger said the NRA has gone from defending gun rights to becoming a grifting scam on those that are strong supporters of the 2nd amendment.
