PORT SAINT LUCIE, FL – Police in Port Saint Lucie are on the hunt for a suspect believed to be behind a series of vehicle break-ins that occurred over the weekend. The spree, which unfolded in just about an hour, has left residents of the Villas of Torino development on edge, especially after a firearm was reported stolen from one of the vehicles.
Authorities report that the suspect targeted eight vehicles in the same community early Sunday morning. Astonishingly, all of the cars involved were left unlocked, allowing the suspect easy access. Surveillance footage from the neighborhood captured the suspect’s movements between 5 and 6 a.m., highlighting a brazen disregard for the residents’ security.
One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted the unsettling moment when she discovered her car had been rummaged through. “I found the center console open and items scattered around,” she said, expressing relief that nothing was taken from her vehicle. However, the situation was different for her neighbors, one of whom reported a missing firearm.
In light of the incident, police are reminding gun owners about the importance of securing their firearms, even though no specific law mandates locking them in vehicles. The police emphasized that responsible gun ownership involves ensuring firearms are not left unattended and are treated as if they are always loaded.
Long-time resident Brian Morrell, who has called the neighborhood home for over two decades, expressed his concern about the incident. “It makes you wonder if you’re next,” he remarked, highlighting the anxiety that such crimes can instill in a community.
Another resident, who has lived in the area for three years, shared her proactive approach following the break-ins. “I make sure nothing of value is left in my car, just in case something like this happens again,” she explained, reinforcing the importance of vigilance.
The police have urged all residents to ensure their vehicles are locked and that valuables are not left inside. They stress that such incidents can happen anywhere and are calling for anyone with information about the suspect to come forward.
Authorities continue their investigation, hoping that the community’s cooperation will lead to a swift resolution and restore peace of mind to the neighborhood.
