Suspect fleeing police rams car into crowded bar killing four

Authorities identified a 22-year-old driver who was arrested after the crash outside Bradley’s on 7th in Ybor City.

TAMPA, Fla. — A speeding car being tracked by law enforcement hurtled onto a busy stretch of 7th Avenue in Ybor City shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday and smashed into pedestrians outside Bradley’s on 7th, killing four people and injuring at least 11 others, police said.

Officials said the incident began when the car was seen driving at high speed and street racing before troopers and Tampa police monitored it from the air and on the ground. As the driver entered the nightlife district, the vehicle lost control and struck people gathered on the sidewalk near North 15th Street. The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation, and Tampa police said the arrested driver faces felony counts that include vehicular homicide and aggravated fleeing. City leaders called it one of the deadliest crashes in the historic entertainment area in recent years as investigators work to confirm the exact number of injured and identify the victims.

Witnesses said the silver sedan clipped parked vehicles and a curb before plowing into the crowd in front of the nightclub. Three adults died at the scene; a fourth victim died later at a hospital, authorities said. Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw called it a “senseless tragedy” and said detectives were gathering surveillance video from nearby businesses. Mayor Jane Castor offered condolences to the families and thanked first responders who moved victims to safety and set up a triage area within minutes. The driver, identified by police as 22-year-old Silas Sampson, was detained near the wrecked car and taken to a hospital for evaluation before being booked into jail, officials said.

Authorities said at least 11 people were treated for injuries ranging from broken bones to head trauma, with several transported to Tampa General Hospital. Later Saturday, local officials said the tally of injured could rise to 13 as they confirm duplicate reports and walk-ins. Investigators marked debris fields across half a block of 7th Avenue, including shattered glass, a crumpled patio barrier and a sheared signpost. The crash happened along a corridor lined with bars and restaurants that typically draws large crowds on weekend nights. Troopers said a patrol aircraft had tracked the car as it sped on Interstate 275 before it exited toward downtown. Any PIT maneuver attempts and decisions to disengage remain under review, according to officials familiar with the early timeline.

Ybor City, one of Tampa’s oldest neighborhoods, attracts locals and tourists with late-night venues and pedestrian traffic that spills onto the sidewalk. Bradley’s on 7th, open since 2010, is a well-known club near the corner of 15th Street and 7th Avenue. City records show prior efforts to manage congestion there with weekend barricades and officers stationed at intersections. Florida agencies have also debated pursuit policies in recent years as street racing complaints increased in Tampa Bay. While most local departments restrict high-speed pursuits to violent felonies, exceptions and coordination with state troopers can vary by case. Saturday’s crash drew comparisons to prior incidents in the district but surpassed them in deaths and injuries, officials said.

Troopers said the driver faces multiple first-degree felony counts, including vehicular homicide and aggravated fleeing and eluding. Formal charging decisions will be made by the state attorney after a review of reports, dashcam and aerial footage, and witness interviews. Authorities said they are working to notify next of kin and will release the names of the deceased once that process is complete. Investigators planned to return to the scene for daylight measurements and reconstruction on Sunday. A judge could set an initial appearance for the suspect as early as Monday in Hillsborough County, where bond and release conditions would be addressed.

By late afternoon, pieces of bumper and headlight assemblies still dotted the curb as sanitation crews cleared the sidewalk. A small cluster of candles and flowers grew near the club’s entrance. “We heard tires screeching and then a boom,” said Anthony Reyes, who works at a nearby restaurant. “People were screaming and running for help.” A rideshare driver waiting on 7th Avenue said officers arrived “within seconds” and began CPR on multiple victims. Local business owners said they expected tighter traffic controls in the coming weeks, while residents described the night as the most chaotic they had seen on the strip in years.

As of Saturday evening, the Florida Highway Patrol said four adults were confirmed dead and at least 11 others were injured. Officials said they expect to release additional details on Sunday, including the latest injury count and the status of the suspect’s booking and court schedule.
