Suspect dead after domestic shooting near school

Deputies say a woman suffered life-threatening injuries as Keene’s Crossing Elementary was placed on a secure hold.

WINDERMERE, FL — A domestic-related shooting Tuesday afternoon in a Windermere neighborhood left a woman critically injured and sparked an hourslong standoff that ended after deputies entered a home and found the suspected gunman dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said.

The incident unfolded Jan. 27 on Sonco Avenue, a residential street a few blocks from Keene’s Crossing Elementary School. Deputies responded around 2:30 p.m. and found a woman with at least one gunshot wound. As investigators believed the shooter remained inside a nearby home, a SWAT team and specialized units converged, shut down roads and used loudspeakers to call for a surrender. The school was placed on a precautionary secure hold, and the district said students and staff were safe. The standoff ended in the evening, when deputies made entry and located the suspect deceased.

By late afternoon, patrol cars, armored vehicles and tape ringed the 14000 block of Sonco Avenue as traffic stacked up around the neighborhood. Parents trying to reach dismissal described being rerouted while the school operated under a secure protocol that keeps people inside buildings as police manage off-campus activity. “After hours of making call-outs for the suspect to come out of the residence, deputies made entry,” the sheriff’s office said in a brief evening update. The woman wounded in the initial shooting was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to deputies. Her name and age were not immediately released Tuesday night. Neighbors said they saw emergency crews rush the victim from the area shortly after the first response.

Orange County Public Schools confirmed Keene’s Crossing Elementary shifted to a secure hold shortly after the law enforcement response began, given the proximity of the scene to campus. Bridgewater Middle School and Windermere High School continued normal operations, a district spokesperson said. On the street, deputies from tactical units and the Hazardous Devices Unit cycled through positions, using shields and long rifles while they established a perimeter and attempted repeated announcements. Residents reported blocked driveways and lengthy delays as the situation stretched into the early evening. The sheriff’s office did not release details about the suspected gunman’s identity, the weapon involved, or the relationship between the two adults beyond describing the shooting as domestic-related. The exact number of shots fired and where the victim was found remained unclear late Tuesday.

Windermere and the surrounding Horizon West area have added thousands of homes in recent years, with several schools and parks nestled among subdivisions. That density, combined with dismissal time, intensified the ripple effects of the police response, which closed portions of nearby roads and rerouted buses and parents. Deputies emphasized that the school was not the target and that the investigation focused on the residence off Sonco Avenue. Past calls for service on the block were not immediately available, and court records tied to the home had not been released by authorities as of Tuesday night. Similar law enforcement posture—armored vehicles, tactical teams, staged medics—has become standard during suspected barricade situations involving firearms, particularly when a victim is already critically hurt and a suspect is believed to be inside.

Investigators said the standoff ended after 8 p.m., when deputies went inside and found the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Forensic technicians remained at the home, documenting rooms and collecting evidence late into the night. Detectives will map the bullet trajectory, examine shell casings and search for digital records such as texts or calls that could establish motive and timing. The sheriff’s office had not announced any charges as the suspected shooter was deceased; however, detectives will prepare a full case file for state attorney review and for closure of the incident report. Authorities said updates on the woman’s condition would be provided when available. No deputies were reported injured. The sheriff’s office did not set a time for a formal briefing Wednesday, but additional information could include the names of those involved and a more precise timeline.

Outside the taped perimeter, drivers waited as deputies diverted traffic around Sonco Avenue. Some parents described the hold at the school as confusing and tense, with limited real-time communication while phones remained inside backpacks. A delivery driver said he was waved away from the block as armored vehicles moved into position. One mother who parked several blocks away said she walked to meet her child once the campus released students in a controlled manner. “We were nervous, but teachers kept the kids in classrooms and calm,” she said. Nearby residents watched as investigators carried evidence bags and technicians photographed the house’s front door under portable lights.

As of late Tuesday, the sheriff’s office classified the woman’s condition as life-threatening. Detectives continued interviews with neighbors and potential witnesses to determine what led to the gunfire and how long the suspect remained inside before the entry. Officials said the neighborhood would see an increased overnight presence while the scene was processed. Further updates were expected to come Wednesday, Jan. 28, including identification of the deceased and any next-of-kin notifications completed by the medical examiner.
