SHANGHAI, CHINA – A man attacked shoppers with a knife in a Shanghai-based Walmart supermarket on Monday night. The stabbing spree resulted in three fatalities and left fifteen others wounded.
The assailant has only been identified by his last name—Lin. At the time of the incident, local police apprehended him at the store. Lin reportedly traveled to Shanghai to express his anger over a money-related issue.
The scene of the stabbing rampage was a Songjiang district shopping mall jam-packed with locals and students due to the forthcoming week-long National Day holidays.
While immediate medical aid was provided to all eighteen victims of the incident, three succumbed to their injuries later at a hospital.
China, where firearms ownership is severely restricted, has experienced a streak of similar stabbing attacks in recent months. A month ago, a 10-year-old Japanese pupil was stabbed fatally near his school in the country’s southern city, Shenzhen.
Also, earlier in June, a stabbing incident in a northeast city open park wounded four instructors from the United States.
The attack in the Shanghai supermarket has plunged the nation into shock and sorrow, underscoring the need for vigilance and improved measures to ensure public safety.
