Harris County investigators believe the husband shot his wife before dying by suicide, though autopsy findings remained pending.
CYPRESS, TX — A man found his parents dead inside a bedroom at their Cypress-area home early Friday, prompting a Harris County investigation into what authorities described as an apparent murder-suicide.
Deputies were called about 2:45 a.m. July 31 to a home in the 13000 block of Campos Drive in the Barwood neighborhood, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. The couple’s adult son told a 911 dispatcher that he had discovered his parents inside their room.
Deputies and emergency medical personnel entered the home and confirmed that the married couple, both in their 70s, were dead. Investigators said evidence found inside the bedroom led them to believe the husband shot his wife and then died by suicide.
Sgt. Michael Ritchie of the Sheriff’s Office Homicide Division said crime scene investigators and homicide detectives were working to determine the sequence of events. Authorities had not released the couple’s names or exact ages as of Saturday.
The son who called 911 lived at the home with his parents and another adult son, authorities said. Both sons were detained while detectives interviewed them about what they knew and the circumstances leading up to the deaths.
The brothers were later released after the interviews. They told investigators that their parents sometimes argued, as married couples may do, but said they were not aware of any previous violence between them.
Authorities had not announced a possible motive or said whether deputies had previously responded to the home. Investigators also had not released additional details about the firearm or other evidence recovered at the scene.
The bodies were taken to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences for autopsies. Those examinations are expected to establish the official causes and manners of death and help investigators confirm their initial assessment.
The Sheriff’s Office continued to classify the deaths as an apparent murder-suicide while awaiting the medical examiner’s findings. No additional suspects were being sought based on the information released by investigators.
