Septic truck causes collapse of 140-year-old bridge

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD – A historic bridge in Baltimore County collapsed as a septic truck crossed it, triggering an investigation into the failure. The incident occurred during the evening rush hour, and the truck driver is now sharing his perspective on the collapse.

The driver, who insists the truck was under the weight limit, partly blames a large tree that fell simultaneously. The collapse happened on Carroll Road, a rural area just ten minutes from Hunt Valley Towne Center.

First responders arrived to find the 145-year-old pin truss bridge in ruins, with the truck resting amid the debris. A large tree also lay across the wreckage. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.

Nearby resident Molly Maroney, who frequently uses the bridge, expressed relief that no school buses or smaller vehicles were involved, considering the timing of the collapse.

Environmental officials assessed the scene and found no leaks or hazards. The truck driver’s brother emphasized that the vehicle complied with weight restrictions and stressed the driver’s awareness of such limits, noting his relief that his brother was unharmed.

Baltimore County Police are leading the investigation, with commercial vehicle inspectors on the case. While the cause remains undetermined, further inspection reports are anticipated.
