Robbery suspect leads police on a high-speed chase then attempts to swim across lake

LONGVIEW, WA – A suspect wanted for robbery and assault was apprehended Monday after leading police on a high-speed chase from Washington into Oregon, where he attempted to evade capture by swimming into a river.

Jaden Hays, 27, faced charges of first-degree robbery and fourth-degree assault stemming from a June 25 incident in Longview, Washington, according to local authorities. Hays allegedly stole from a family member and issued death threats during the encounter.

The chase began when officers identified Hays’ black Volkswagen at Miller’s Market in Longview around 8 p.m. Monday. When police attempted a traffic stop, Hays sped away, initiating a pursuit that would span over 15 miles and cross state lines.

Reaching speeds of up to 120 mph, Hays led officers across the Lewis and Clark Bridge into Oregon. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office deployed spike strips near Clatskanie, successfully disabling Hays’ vehicle.

In a desperate bid to escape, Hays abandoned his car and attempted to swim across the Columbia River. Authorities, however, managed to persuade him to return to shore, where he was taken into custody without further resistance.

Hays was booked into Columbia County Jail on charges of felony eluding, resisting arrest, and reckless driving. He is expected to be extradited back to Longview to face additional charges.
