Robbery Pursuit Ends With Serious Rollover Crash

Police said suspects in two stolen vehicles fled after returning to the scene of an armed robbery in Commerce City.

COMMERCE CITY, CO — Three people were hospitalized with serious injuries early Monday after police said an armed robbery in Commerce City led to a pursuit on Interstate 70 and a rollover crash in Denver.

The crash followed a robbery outside a home in the 6100 block of Oneida Street, where police said several people were held up at gunpoint and knifepoint. Commerce City police said the case remains under investigation, with one suspect vehicle recovered after the crash and a second vehicle still missing.

Police said the robbery happened overnight Sunday into Monday while victims were outside a residence near Oneida Street and East 61st Place. Investigators said two groups of suspects arrived in two vehicles and robbed several people before driving away. Officers were still in the area speaking with victims when both suspect vehicles returned to the scene, police said. When officers tried to stop them, the drivers refused and fled. Commerce City police said the pursuit went onto I-70 before one driver exited at North Pecos Street. That vehicle crashed into a retaining wall near the highway and flipped, ending the chase for the people inside.

Three people in the crashed vehicle were taken to a hospital with serious injuries, police said. Two of them were identified only as a 16-year-old male and an 18-year-old male. Police had not released the name, age or condition of the third person by Tuesday morning. Officers began life-saving measures on one injured person at the crash scene before emergency medical crews arrived. Police said both vehicles tied to the robbery had been reported stolen. The second vehicle escaped after the pursuit, and investigators said four people who were inside it remained at large.

The crash happened near North Pecos Street and I-70, a busy corridor between Commerce City and Denver. The robbery scene was several miles northeast, in a residential area near East 61st Place. Police said the people who were robbed were outside a home when the suspects confronted them with a gun and a knife. No injuries to the robbery victims were reported in the first public accounts of the case. Authorities did not say what property was taken, how long the pursuit lasted or whether officers recovered any weapons from the crashed vehicle.

The investigation is split between agencies because the case crossed city lines. Commerce City police are investigating the aggravated robbery, the stolen vehicles and the search for the people who fled in the second vehicle. Denver police are investigating the crash at North Pecos Street. Police had not announced charges by Tuesday morning, and no court dates had been released. It was not clear whether the hospitalized suspects had been booked, cited or placed under police guard while receiving treatment.

Images from the scene showed the aftermath of a hard crash near the interstate, where the fleeing vehicle struck a retaining wall and rolled. The crash left police and medical crews handling both a felony robbery investigation and an injury scene before the morning commute. Police said the suspects returned to the robbery scene while officers were interviewing victims, a turn that quickly shifted the case from a neighborhood investigation to a highway pursuit. The search continued for the second stolen vehicle and the four people believed to have been inside it.

The case remained active Tuesday, with three injured suspects hospitalized and four others still being sought. The next major step is expected from Commerce City and Denver investigators as they identify the people involved and determine possible charges.
