Incident unfolded just before 10 p.m. Saturday in the Southside neighborhood, police said.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Metro Police say two officers shot and killed a suspected armed robber late Saturday after the man ran and pulled a handgun in the Southside neighborhood. The confrontation happened just before 10 p.m. in the 100 block of East Southland Boulevard. No officers were hurt.
Police said the encounter began with a 9:55 p.m. call reporting a robbery at gunpoint. Dispatchers broadcast a suspect description to Fourth Division officers heading to the area. Officers who arrived found a person matching that description near the scene. When they tried to make contact, the individual fled and displayed a handgun, according to police. Investigators said two officers fired and the man was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical crews. Detectives recovered a handgun nearby. The agency’s Public Integrity Unit is leading the investigation as required in police shootings.
Neighbors described a swift and heavy response. “I saw a lot of police activity,” said Mary Leach, who lives near East Southland Boulevard and said her children were frightened by the lights and sirens. Leach said a food delivery driver mistakenly came to her building just before shots were fired, adding, “That could have actually been in my building. I’m very lucky it wasn’t.” Another resident, Teaundez Williams, said the late-night violence has changed routines: “Do I want to go outside and actually keep up my health routine? Or do I just want to stick inside and hope it doesn’t hit next to my doorstep,” Williams said.
Police did not immediately release the man’s name or age, citing next-of-kin notifications. The officers who fired have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard after critical incidents. Deputy Chief Ryan Bates said the Public Integrity Unit is gathering body-worn camera recordings, radio traffic and physical evidence from the 100 block of East Southland Boulevard. Investigators marked the roadway and sidewalk with evidence placards as cruisers blocked traffic and crime-scene tape sealed off the area. Detectives are reviewing the initial armed-robbery report and canvassing for witnesses and additional video from nearby homes and businesses. No additional injuries were reported.
The area, a mix of apartments, small businesses and service stations off Southside Drive, has seen periodic police activity this fall, drawing concern from residents. Saturday’s police shooting comes amid ongoing scrutiny of use of force in Louisville following prior high-profile cases and reforms to department policy and training. LMPD policy requires activation of body-worn cameras during enforcement actions and mandates outside review by the Public Integrity Unit for shootings involving officers. Police said they intend to release video clips and incident materials after preliminary investigation steps are complete.
Officials said the names of the involved officers will be released within 72 hours of the shooting, in keeping with department practice, and that body-camera footage is expected to be released within 10 days. Investigators will forward findings to prosecutors for review after interviews, forensic analysis and evidence processing. LMPD plans to hold additional briefings as more facts are confirmed. As of Sunday night, no charges had been announced in connection with the reported armed robbery that preceded the encounter. A separate internal review will examine whether policies were followed and whether additional training or corrective steps are recommended.
By late night, crime-scene technicians remained on East Southland Boulevard, photographing shell casings and mapping the scene under floodlights as neighbors watched from apartment balconies. Some residents said they were staying indoors until police cleared the area. Leach said her children were calmed by family after the gunfire ended. Williams said the frequent emergency lights make evenings feel “on edge,” though he praised the quick response time. Officers spoke briefly with several bystanders before clearing the block and reopening the street.
Police said the investigation remains active. The officers’ names are expected by Tuesday, Nov. 25, and a body-camera release is planned by Tuesday, Dec. 2, pending review. Detectives asked anyone who witnessed the robbery or the encounter to contact investigators as they work to determine the sequence of events and whether additional suspects are involved.
