Surveillance video captured the suspect fleeing after Joshua Hardaman III was shot outside a Lancaster Road convenience store in June.
DALLAS, TX — Dallas police are asking for the public’s help identifying a man suspected of fatally shooting 25-year-old Joshua Hardaman III outside an East Oak Cliff convenience store before running from the area.
Hardaman was shot about 3:10 p.m. June 3 in the 3500 block of Lancaster Road, near Dream Food Market, according to Dallas police and recent reporting on the investigation. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition and remained hospitalized for nearly three weeks. Police said Hardaman died from his injuries June 23, turning the investigation into a homicide case.
Investigators now hope surveillance video from the store and nearby homes will help identify the shooter. Video reviewed by investigators shows Hardaman meeting an unidentified man near the convenience store before the two had a verbal exchange. Police say the encounter escalated when the other man pulled a gun and shot Hardaman.
The suspect left the shooting scene on foot before officers arrived. Additional doorbell surveillance video captured a man believed to be the shooter running along Leacrest Drive after the gunfire, according to reporting based on the Dallas Police Department investigation. Detectives have not publicly identified the man or announced an arrest.
Police released a description based on the surveillance footage. The unidentified man was seen wearing a gray jacket with the hood pulled up and black-and-white tennis shoes. Investigators believe the images, combined with the location and time of the shooting, could help someone recognize him.
Dallas police Detective Kenneth Castoral has said the shooting happened in the middle of the afternoon, when people could have been walking or driving nearby. “This was three o’clock in the afternoon during the day, so somebody had to be walking by, driving by,” Castoral said in an interview with FOX 4.
The circumstances leading to the argument have not been publicly detailed. Police have not announced a suspected motive, and investigators have not said whether Hardaman and the gunman knew each other before they met at the store. No additional person has been identified as participating in the shooting.
The Dallas Police Department initially reported only that an unknown suspect had shot a person in the 3500 block of Lancaster Road and fled before officers arrived. On June 24, police publicly identified the victim as Hardaman, one day after his death. The department listed the investigation under case number 079942-2026.
Hardaman was born Dec. 28, 2000, according to funeral information published after his death. Services were held in early July in Dallas, followed by burial in Grand Prairie. Police have released no indication that investigators believe his death was connected to another homicide or broader series of crimes.
As of Aug. 27, police were still seeking the shooter and had not announced an arrest. The homicide investigation remains open while detectives work to identify the man captured on surveillance video and determine what led to the deadly encounter.
