Surveillance footage captured three men laughing and assaulting a 24-year-old victim near his southwest Houston home.
HOUSTON, TX — Detectives with the Houston Police Department are searching for three suspects connected to the fatal beating and robbery of a 24-year-old man in a strip center parking lot earlier this month. The victim, identified as Gavin Melchor, died from multiple blunt force injuries following the March 2 attack.
Investigators released surveillance video this week showing three men confronting Melchor outside a convenience store near Westridge and South Main streets. The footage depicts a coordinated assault where the victim was robbed of cash and struck repeatedly while bystanders watched from the parking lot. Police have classified the case as a homicide and are working to identify the individuals shown in the footage before they can flee the region or commit further acts of violence.
The incident began at approximately 1:10 a.m. when Melchor was seen talking to a group of individuals in a black truck. Surveillance cameras recorded a suspect in a white t-shirt and green shorts suddenly charging at Melchor and knocking him to the ground. As the victim lay on his back, the suspect reportedly rifled through his pockets to steal cash Melchor had recently withdrawn from an ATM. “He wasn’t fighting back,” said Kimberly Melchor, the victim’s aunt. “He was just trying to hold him back. He looked helpless.”
During the struggle, a second suspect wearing a black sweater with an orange design allegedly kicked Melchor in the head. A third suspect, described as wearing a black sweater and carrying a pink bag, is seen in the footage delivering a blow that knocked the 24-year-old unconscious. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences later determined that these injuries proved fatal. Officers from the Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division, led by Sergeant A. Lopez and Detective N. Sharp, found Melchor unresponsive near the driveway of the strip center after responding to an assault-in-progress call.
Witness accounts and video evidence suggest the suspects remained at the scene briefly following the assault. Family members who viewed the unreleased portions of the video described the suspects as laughing and appearing to enjoy themselves while the victim remained on the pavement. Chris Melchor, Gavin’s father, called the attackers “cowards” and noted that his son was known for a gentle nature and had been returning home with a gift for his grandmother. The attack occurred just steps from the victim’s residence near the NRG Park area.
The Houston Police Department has provided specific descriptions of the three men currently at large. All three are described as Black males. In addition to the suspect in the white shirt and green shorts, the second suspect wore black pants and blue shoes. The third suspect was seen in black shorts alongside the pink bag used during the assault. No arrests have been made as of Friday, and investigators are currently reviewing tips submitted by the public to determine if the suspects have a history of similar robberies in the southwest Houston corridor.
Legal proceedings will follow once the suspects are taken into custody, with charges of capital murder or felony murder expected given the robbery component of the crime. Crime Stoppers of Houston has announced a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Detectives are urging anyone who recognizes the clothing or the specific pink bag carried by the third suspect to contact the Homicide Division. The investigation remains active as authorities track the movement of the black truck seen in the initial moments of the footage.
Gavin Melchor’s family continues to hold vigils near the site of the attack, describing him as a soul full of energy who worked as a warehouse distributor. Co-workers at his place of employment reported becoming concerned when he failed to show up for his shift on the Monday following the beating. The local community has placed flowers near the 2900 block of Westridge Street as police maintain a presence in the area to gather further witness statements from late-night patrons of the nearby businesses.
Authorities expect to release further updates as digital forensics teams enhance the surveillance images to provide clearer views of the suspects’ faces. The next milestone in the case will be the formal identification of the suspects, which police believe is imminent given the clarity of the retail center’s camera system. No further briefings are scheduled for the weekend.
