Police officer shot and killed in traffic stop

TERRELL, TX – A solemn mood enveloped the city of Terrell, Texas, as the community mourned the loss of Police Officer Jacob Candanoza, who was tragically killed in the line of duty. The incident unfolded late Thursday night during a routine traffic stop near a Super 8 Motel, close to the intersection of Interstate 20 and Highway 34. As Officer Candanoza requested backup, he was fatally shot, leaving the community in shock and sorrow.

The crime scene, initially bustling with activity, was cleared by Friday morning. Only remnants of the investigation remained, with a few state troopers maintaining a presence. Throughout the night, multiple law enforcement agencies, including Mesquite and Forney police, responded to the scene. The Texas Rangers later joined the investigation, which has since concluded.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific events leading to the shooting. However, the incident prompted an immediate response from emergency services after receiving 911 calls reporting that an officer had been shot. With the scene secured, fire and emergency medical services were dispatched to assist.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene. Thanks to a witness providing a license plate number, off-duty Texas Highway Patrol officers located the suspect’s vehicle. This led to a high-speed chase into Van Zandt County. A coordinated search effort along Interstate 20 and Highway 64, involving drones and K-9 units, resulted in the apprehension of the 25-year-old suspect, who hails from Mississippi. He is currently held at the Kaufman County Detention Center.

Officer Candanoza was a husband, father, and former Marine, having served his country for four years. He joined the Terrell Police Department just a few months ago in July, at the age of 28. Outside the police headquarters, a solemn wreath with his badge number, 6190, serves as a tribute to his service and sacrifice.

A procession in his honor saw an outpouring of support from law enforcement agencies across the region, including the Dallas Police Department and the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office. An American flag draped over his casket symbolized the respect and gratitude for his dedication.

Candanoza leaves behind a young family, including a 5-year-old daughter. Friends and colleagues remember him as a devoted officer and a man of integrity. Valentine Torres, a close friend and fellow Marine, expressed his deep sense of loss, describing Candanoza as a person who took his responsibilities seriously and touched many lives.

The community of Terrell now grapples with the loss of a dedicated officer, whose life was tragically cut short in service to others.
