Police Investigate Bat Attack On Nanny

The woman’s husband said she fought back while trying to protect the baby in her care.

SUGAR LAND, TX — Police are investigating after a nanny said a man attacked her with a baseball bat Friday morning while she was walking with a baby near Creekbend Drive and Fluor Daniel Drive.

The reported assault drew public concern Sunday as Sugar Land police searched for a suspect and possible video from the area. The woman was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, and her family said she was expected to remain there for at least one or two more days.

The attack happened about 10:25 a.m. Friday near the intersection in Sugar Land, police said. The woman told investigators she was walking in the area when an unknown man approached her from behind and struck her with a bat. Her husband, Dannel Caban, said his wife was caring for a child at the time. “She fought trying to save the baby,” Caban said. “She fought back.” He said the man had pulled up in a vehicle, got out with a baseball bat and asked her for directions before the attack began.

Caban said his wife became afraid when she saw the bat and tried to move away. He said the man then came toward her and hit her in the back of the head. Caban said she suffered several blows to her head, arms and hands. Images of her injuries showed broken bones, bruises and stitches, he said. “When I got to the hospital, I found my wife covered in blood, her face, her clothes, her arm broken,” Caban said. A bystander came over after she screamed, and help was called. Police have not released the woman’s name.

Investigators said the suspect was described as a Black man believed to be in his 30s or 40s. Police said he left the area in an SUV, but the vehicle description remained unclear because reports differed on whether it was light or dark colored. The department said officers were checking the area for possible surveillance video. Police had not announced an arrest by Sunday afternoon, and the motive remained unknown. Caban said he and his wife also did not know why the attack happened.

The case remains in its early investigative stage. Sugar Land police confirmed they were investigating the alleged assault but released few additional details. No charges had been announced, and police had not said whether they believed the woman and suspect knew each other. The department said anyone with information could contact Sugar Land police or Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers. The available suspect details were limited, making video, witness accounts and vehicle information key parts of the investigation.

The reported assault happened along a developed Sugar Land corridor near homes, offices and local roads, an area where walkers and drivers may have been nearby late Friday morning. Caban said the attack ended after his wife screamed and the man left. “She started screaming and with her hand like that, started screaming really loud,” he said. “That’s when he took off.” Caban said the family wants the man found. “I don’t want this to happen to nobody else because it’s hard,” he said. “It’s hard.”

As of Monday, police were still investigating and had not reported an arrest. The next step is expected to center on identifying the suspect, confirming the SUV description and reviewing any video from the area.
