Detroit police are reviewing surveillance video and searching for information about a shooting that left one victim dead and another hospitalized.
DETROIT, MI — One man was killed and another was wounded Friday afternoon in a shooting at King Cole Foods near Woodward Avenue and Clairmount Street, according to Detroit police.
Police said the shooting happened shortly after 2 p.m. Oct. 9. Investigators found one man suffering from a gunshot wound in the vestibule of the grocery store. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A second man later arrived at another area hospital with a gunshot wound and was listed in stable condition, according to later police information reported by local news outlets.
The identities of the two men had not been released Friday night. Police also had not announced a suspect description or identified a possible motive. The investigation remained active as homicide detectives worked at the scene and searched for information that could explain what led to the shooting.
Detroit Police Cmdr. Philip Rodriguez told reporters that investigators were reviewing surveillance footage and canvassing the surrounding area. “Unfortunately, we have one fatal victim and one nonfatal victim,” Rodriguez said. He said investigators did not yet have information about a suspect or any confirmed leads.
Investigators were examining video from the grocery store and checking nearby buildings for additional surveillance footage that might have recorded the shooting or someone leaving the area. Police also collected evidence near the entrance of the store. Local reports said officers found shell casings around the entrance after arriving at the scene.
Initial reports differed slightly on the exact timing of the police response, but authorities and multiple local news organizations placed the shooting shortly after 2 p.m. near the intersection of Clairmount Street and Woodward Avenue. Police have not publicly explained whether both men were shot at the same location or how the second victim reached the hospital.
No arrests had been announced as of Friday night. Authorities also had not released information about any relationship between the two victims or whether either man was specifically targeted. Those questions remained part of the continuing homicide investigation.
Detroit police continued to seek information from people who may have witnessed the shooting or recorded activity near King Cole Foods around the time it occurred. The department’s homicide investigators were continuing to review evidence, and police had not released additional information about a suspect by late Friday.
