One killed and seven others serverly injured in major crash

DAVIE, FL – A tragic accident on the Florida Turnpike left one woman dead and several others injured, causing major traffic disruptions on Thursday afternoon. The collision, which involved a tractor-trailer and a passenger van, occurred near the Griffin Road overpass around mile marker 54, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Emergency responders from Davie Fire Rescue arrived at the scene to find one woman deceased. Another adult, critically injured, was airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center. Additionally, seven others, including four adults and three children, were transported to Memorial Regional Hospital for treatment of various injuries.

The accident has caused significant traffic congestion, particularly affecting the southbound lanes of the turnpike, which have been completely shut down. Motorists are being redirected at exit 53 to U.S. 441, further exacerbating the already heavy traffic conditions during rush hour.

Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes as officials work to clear the scene and investigate the cause of the crash. The southbound lanes, which briefly reopened with one lane available, have since closed again, leaving traffic at a standstill. Northbound lanes remain open but are experiencing slower-than-usual speeds.

Commuters are urged to consider using University Drive or U.S. 441, though the latter is already experiencing significant delays due to the increased traffic volume. Travel speeds in the area have plummeted, with some sections seeing movement at a mere five miles per hour.

Authorities have not provided an estimate for when the turnpike will fully reopen. As investigations continue, drivers are encouraged to remain patient and vigilant, especially as many are forced to navigate unfamiliar routes.

The incident highlights the dangers of highway travel and serves as a reminder for drivers to exercise caution, particularly around large vehicles like tractor-trailers. The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
