HARLEM, NY – A tragic explosion on a barge in the Hudson River has left one person dead and two others injured, the U.S. Coast Guard reported on Tuesday. The incident occurred near 12th Avenue and West 135th Street, close to the North River Wastewater Treatment Plant, when a flame or spark triggered the explosion, according to authorities.
The barge, named Hunts Point, is used for transporting sewage to the treatment plant. The explosion happened around 10:30 a.m., causing a large blast in one of the vessel’s holds. The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) quickly responded, deploying firefighters, hazmat teams, and marine units to the scene. First responders were captured on video from the Citizen app, showing the barge docked on the river with emergency personnel attending to the situation.
FDNY Assistant Deputy Chief David Sims confirmed that all three victims were employees working on the ship. Two were rushed to a local hospital, while a 59-year-old man tragically lost his life at the scene. The names of the victims have not been released pending notification of their families.
The incident prompted a comprehensive response from local and federal agencies. The FDNY noted that personnel required decontamination due to sewage present on the deck, although the Coast Guard assured that no pollution had been reported in the Hudson River.
As investigations continue, officials are working to determine the exact cause of the explosion. The accident underscores the inherent dangers faced by those working in industrial settings, particularly in operations involving hazardous materials.
Authorities are urging caution and are committed to uncovering the circumstances that led to this tragic event. The community is reminded of the risks associated with the vital work of maintaining the city’s infrastructure, highlighting the importance of safety measures.
The investigation remains ongoing, with officials promising to provide updates as more information becomes available. The city mourns the loss of life and hopes for the recovery of the injured workers.
