Officer arrested in drug raid

PAWTUCKET, RI – A former Providence police officer has been arrested following a lengthy narcotics investigation, Pawtucket police announced today. Destiny Viera, 25, was taken into custody this morning after authorities gathered substantial evidence against her.

The investigation, which spanned several months, culminated in Viera facing multiple drug-related charges. Notably, she is accused of selling or manufacturing drugs near a school, a charge that carries severe penalties.

Viera had joined the Providence Police Department just last September, taking an oath to serve the community. However, her career was cut short by the allegations, which led to her immediate dismissal from the force. Providence Police Chief Colonel Oscar Perez confirmed that Viera, being a probationary officer, would not be retained due to the gravity of the charges.

At the time of her arrest, Viera was earning a salary of approximately $73,000. Chief Perez expressed disappointment, highlighting the lost potential of a young officer who had the chance to make a positive impact in the community.

The arrest also involved 24-year-old Jaylan Lopez of Pawtucket, who faces similar charges. Both individuals are accused of drug dealing and manufacturing, with activities allegedly taking place in proximity to a school.

While the exact location of the drug bust remains undisclosed, Pawtucket police emphasized the seriousness of the situation. The department assured the public that such incidents do not reflect the dedication of the many officers committed to upholding the law.
