SAN DIEGO, CA – An investigation has uncovered a scandal involving a San Diego police officer accused of installing hidden cameras in her ex-husband’s home and placing tracking devices on his vehicle. Officer Stephanie Cockrell, facing these serious allegations, denies them, asserting that the cameras were meant to monitor their infant child.
Stephanie Cockrell and her ex-husband, Tyler Cockrell, both serve in the San Diego Police Department. Tyler discovered a spy camera, disguised as a USB charger, in his kitchen in 2021. He claims to have found additional cameras beneath his bed and other furniture. He provided the court with screenshots allegedly showing Stephanie installing these devices after she had moved out.
Tyler also alleges that Stephanie placed tracking devices on his vehicle, hidden in a magnetic box discovered by his mechanic. He claims she spied on his girlfriend, leading him to seek a restraining order out of fear for his safety and privacy.
In response to these accusations, Stephanie labeled them as “wild” and “unsubstantiated.” She insists she has never broken into Tyler’s home and claims the devices were purchased jointly to monitor their child. She argues the screenshots were taken during a temporary stay with Tyler, with his consent for the camera installations.
Despite these defenses, a subpoena from Amazon revealed that Stephanie purchased various surveillance equipment, including cameras and a GPS tracker. Under oath, she struggled to recall these purchases, denying any intent to spy.
The court battle is not Stephanie’s first encounter with controversy. In 2016, she admitted to hacking into the phone of an officer she was involved with, leading to legal complications. This incident raised questions about her conduct within the police department.
Tyler has also faced internal investigations in the past, including suspensions for improper conduct. Despite these issues, he continues to serve as an officer.
The San Diego Police Department has not disclosed any disciplinary actions taken against Stephanie or confirmed any investigations into the camera allegations. The judge has yet to decide on Tyler’s request for a restraining order.
