New video shows suspect after gunpoint robbery of nursing mom

Houston police say two suspects fled after the baby hit the concrete during the struggle.

HOUSTON, TX — A new video released this week shows one of two suspects police believe robbed a breastfeeding mother at gunpoint in Houston, an attack that knocked her newborn to the ground and sent the baby for medical care, according to authorities and a witness.

The footage is the latest push by investigators to identify the men and track their path through a neighborhood near Middle Street and Fox Street, where a witness said people began yelling that a mother and her baby had been robbed. Police have not named the victim or the suspects, and no arrests had been announced as of Thursday evening. Officials said both the mother and baby are expected to be OK, but the case has drawn sharp reaction because it happened in daylight and involved an infant.

Video clips shared by a local news outlet show two men running down a street around 12:15 p.m. before the robbery, then later show one man dropping what appeared to be a purse near a fence. The suspect climbs the fence, rummages through the bag and then picks up what looks like a handgun before running away. A nearby resident who asked not to be identified said she heard shouting and stepped outside to ask what was happening. The witness said someone told her a man had just robbed a mother who was nursing her newborn and that the suspects were running away. She said the mother appeared to be in shock and, in the confusion, the baby fell onto the concrete and hit her head.

Houston police said the robbery happened in the city’s Second Ward area, and the witness said the suspects moved through nearby streets as people tried to figure out where they went. Another video appears to show a man in a backyard after the incident, then later sitting on an outdoor air-conditioning unit. In that clip, the man pulls what looks like a gun from his pants, the witness and the news report said. The witness told reporters police recovered one of the suspect’s jackets from a relative’s yard, suggesting investigators believe at least one suspect shed clothing while trying to avoid being found.

Authorities have not publicly identified the two men or said what property was taken, and it is not clear whether the suspects knew the victim or targeted her. Police also have not said whether the baby’s injuries were minor or required extended treatment, only that the baby and mother are expected to be OK. The witness said she was shaken by what she heard and saw in the aftermath. “I was horrified,” she said in an interview shared by the news outlet. “Who would do that to a mother and a newborn, the most innocent people that could have been there?”

The videos circulating online have been edited to blur faces because the people shown have not been arrested or formally charged, the report said. That approach reflects a common practice by news outlets when police are seeking leads but have not yet confirmed identities. Investigators often release short sequences from doorbell cameras, business surveillance, or neighborhood security systems to build a timeline and prompt tips from residents who recognize a person’s clothing, walk, or route. In this case, the new video is meant to give a clearer look at one suspect’s movements after the robbery and show details such as where the suspect went, what he carried, and what he appeared to discard.

The case has also focused attention on how quickly a routine moment can turn dangerous in residential areas, especially in broad daylight. Robbery investigations often rely on a patchwork of videos captured from different angles, along with witness statements that can be incomplete in stressful situations. Police have not said whether they have recovered the stolen property, whether the suspects used a vehicle, or how far they got before leaving the area. They also have not released descriptions such as height, weight, or clothing beyond what appears in the footage, and they have not said whether they believe the suspects committed other robberies.

Houston police told the station that the mother and baby are expected to be OK, but they said the suspects remain at large. Investigators have not announced charges, and the report did not list a court date or suspect warrant information. In cases like this, detectives may interview nearby residents, canvass for additional surveillance video, and map out the suspects’ possible escape routes. Police can also use recovered items, such as clothing left behind, to test for DNA or other evidence, though officials have not said whether that is happening here.

Neighbors described a scramble after the robbery, with people looking up and down the street and trying to understand what had happened. The witness said she was told the suspects were “on the run” and that no one could find them in the minutes after the attack. She said she later learned police had taken a jacket from the yard, and she worried about what could have happened if the suspects had entered a home or confronted more people while fleeing. Even without an arrest, the witness said the moment left a lasting impression because of the baby’s fall and the mother’s shock.

Police said they are asking anyone with information about the suspects or the videos to contact investigators. As of Thursday evening, police had not said whether they plan to release additional footage or a clearer suspect image, and they had not provided an updated timeline for an arrest. The investigation remained active, with the newest video intended to help identify at least one suspect and confirm his route after the robbery.
