SAN DIEGO, CA – A tragic series of events unfolded, leading to the death of La Mesa Police Officer Lauren Craven. Antonio Alcantar, a Navy veteran, stood in court facing charges, including murder, in connection with the fatal incident.
Alcantar, who has served 11 years in the Navy as a master at arms, equivalent to a police officer, pleaded not guilty. The courtroom was filled with uniformed officers as the deputy district attorney detailed the case against him.
On the night of the accident, Alcantar reportedly visited several locations, including a bar and a restaurant, before driving his Toyota Camry. His blood alcohol concentration was found to be twice the legal limit, according to the deputy district attorney.
The crash occurred on October 20th on Interstate 8. Officer Craven, returning from Central Jail, stopped to assist following a two-car collision. She managed to save several individuals, moving them to safety just moments before Alcantar’s vehicle struck her and 19-year-old Devonte Morris.
Video evidence from a Tesla showed Alcantar’s vehicle making no attempts to brake or change course. The defense argues that Alcantar did not intend harm and that the incident was a complex tragedy, not a premeditated act.
Morris also died at the scene, but the investigation into his death continues. Currently, Alcantar faces charges solely related to Officer Craven’s death. His bail is set at $1 million.
