National Guard aircraft crash lands in a field

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – A National Guard aircraft crash-landed in a field near Southeast 119th and Sooner Road on a rainy night, prompting an immediate investigation. Fortunately, both pilots aboard the aircraft emerged unscathed, according to local authorities.

The aircraft, identified as a Skyraider, is a new addition to the Air Guard fleet at Will Rogers Air Guard Base. The plane struck two power poles during its descent, causing damage to its wings, but the crash was deemed survivable due to the aircraft’s robust design, which includes a roll cage and airbags.

Sky 5 pilot Chase Rutledge, who is familiar with the aircraft, reported live from the scene, noting the plane’s recent introduction to the Air Guard. Despite the crash, the Skyraider’s durability ensured the pilots’ safety, though airbags did not deploy.

The aircraft, originally designed for agricultural spraying, has been modified by the Air Force for various purposes. Details about these modifications remain undisclosed, but the Air Guard had significant plans for its use.

On the ground, KOCO reporter Jason Berger confirmed the absence of serious injuries and remarked on the favorable outcome given the circumstances. The collision with power lines prior to landing raised questions about the cause, though no immediate answers were available.

Emergency crews, including Oklahoma City Fire Department personnel, were on-site assessing the situation. The lack of visible damage and the absence of ambulances leaving the scene suggested minimal injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, with officials working to determine the cause of the crash. Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
