Murder suspect chased onto pier and shot by police

NEWPORT BEACH, CA – A peaceful morning at Newport Beach Pier turned into a scene of chaos when a police pursuit involving a homicide suspect ended in a dramatic shootout. The suspect, wanted for a crime in Menifee, was fatally shot by police, with the confrontation caught on camera by a bystander fishing with his family.

The tranquility of the pier, typically a destination for early risers eager to catch the sunrise and their first fish of the day, was shattered by the sudden arrival of multiple police vehicles. Witnesses described the surreal sight of a car speeding onto the pier, followed closely by police officers. The suspect reportedly exited the vehicle with a firearm, prompting officers to open fire.

John Robinson, who was on an annual fishing trip with his four-year-old son and other family members, recounted the terrifying moments as they sought cover. “We were just trying to protect our family,” he said, describing the immediate instinct to shield his son from the unfolding danger.

The incident began in the early hours when Santa Ana police were alerted to gunfire at a Menifee residence. Upon arrival, officers discovered 38-year-old Storm Wolf of Temecula deceased. The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Jose Velazquez, was believed to have fled the scene, leading police on a chase through several cities before culminating at the pier.

Authorities confirmed that Velazquez was armed when he exited his vehicle, and a firearm was recovered at the scene. Witnesses reported hearing over a dozen gunshots during the confrontation, which left many in shock, given Newport Beach’s reputation as a safe area.

Local fishing enthusiasts expressed relief that no bystanders were injured in the incident. “It’s a miracle no one else was hurt,” one visitor said, reflecting on how close they were to the line of fire.

As the investigation continues, police have yet to release further details regarding the officers involved in the shooting. The incident has left the community grappling with the unexpected violence in a place known for its peaceful atmosphere.

For Robinson and his family, the experience was traumatic, especially for his young son. “It’s something we never expected to face here,” he said, emphasizing the lasting impact on his family.
