The chase crossed several Los Angeles communities before CHP officers forced the suspect’s SUV to a stop in Montebello.
MONTEBELLO, CA — A man sought in connection with an armed road-rage shooting investigation was arrested Tuesday morning after leading California Highway Patrol officers on a high-speed pursuit across Los Angeles County, authorities said.
The pursuit began shortly after 7:15 a.m. when Santa Monica police investigators attempted to take the driver into custody in connection with a July 3 road-rage incident. The confrontation reportedly involved a firearm near Cloverfield Boulevard and Broadway, but authorities had not released further details about the allegation or identified the suspect as of Tuesday afternoon.
Initial news coverage described the driver as a murder suspect. Later reports citing the Santa Monica Police Department and the CHP identified him as a suspect in a road-rage investigation rather than a homicide case. Officials had not announced the charges he could face following his arrest.
Santa Monica officers requested help from the CHP after the driver fled in a black Range Rover, authorities said. CHP officers began pursuing the SUV on the southbound 405 Freeway near the 118 Freeway in the Pacoima area.
The driver continued through the San Fernando Valley and central Los Angeles before reaching the 101 Freeway. Aerial video showed the SUV moving between vehicles in heavy morning traffic as patrol units followed.
The pursuit moved onto surface streets in Koreatown, where the driver entered opposing traffic lanes along Vermont Avenue, according to broadcast reports. The SUV later returned to the freeway and traveled east on the 10 Freeway toward the San Gabriel Valley.
The Range Rover reached speeds exceeding 100 mph during parts of the chase. Authorities said the driver narrowly avoided other vehicles as the pursuit continued through morning traffic. No collisions or injuries were reported during the freeway portion of the chase.
The driver left the freeway and entered a residential area near Montebello shortly before 8 a.m. The chase ended near San Gabriel Boulevard and Hill Drive after a CHP officer used a patrol vehicle to strike the SUV and force it to stop near a center median.
Officers surrounded the Range Rover, removed the driver through the front passenger side and placed him in handcuffs. Authorities did not immediately release his name, booking information or details about when he would appear in court.
The Santa Monica Police Department was expected to continue investigating the road-rage allegation. Officials had not disclosed whether a weapon was recovered from the SUV or whether anyone was injured during the original July 3 incident.
