ARVADA, CO – Authorities are investigating a series of smash-and-grab burglaries that targeted two local businesses in Arvada and Wheat Ridge. Surveillance footage captured the same suspect vehicle at both crime scenes, leading police to link the incidents.
The first break-in occurred at a vacant property in Arvada, followed shortly by a similar crime at a liquor store in Wheat Ridge. Both establishments’ surveillance cameras recorded a 2013 Hyundai Sonata, believed to be used by the suspects.
Jason Margin, who operates the first targeted business, expressed disbelief upon discovering the aftermath. “When I closed the shop last night, there was nothing suspicious. But this morning, the windows were shattered,” he recounted. The burglars made off with thousands of dollars in merchandise but curiously left the cash register and safe untouched.
The second burglary took place just 20 minutes later, leaving the store owner and employees in Wheat Ridge stunned. “It’s shocking and depressing to see this happen,” one employee said, noting the financial strain on the business due to the damages.
In both cases, the perpetrators abandoned the vehicle inside the stores, leaving behind significant destruction. Repair costs for the damage, particularly to store entrances, are mounting, with one owner estimating $10,000 for door repairs alone.
These recent crimes echo a trend of connected smash-and-grabs in the area. In March, three similar incidents were reported in Arvada and Wheat Ridge, prompting police to intensify their efforts to curb such crimes in the West Metro area.
Despite the chaos, business owners remain hopeful for a swift resolution. “I don’t mind the cleanup, but I hope it doesn’t happen again,” Margin added, reflecting the sentiments of many in the community.
Authorities urge anyone with information about the suspects or the incidents to come forward as investigations continue.
