HARTFORD, CT – A tragic incident over the weekend has left a Hartford family mourning the loss of 23-year-old Tonyque Davis. Just days before her daughter’s third birthday, Davis was struck and killed in a hit-and-run accident in the city’s south end. The suspect, Clarence Cross, 45, appeared in Hartford Superior Court on Monday, facing multiple charges, including negligent homicide.
Davis’s family gathered at the courthouse, seeking justice for their beloved Tonyque, who they remembered as a devoted mother and a vibrant young woman. “Tonyque was a beautiful soul,” said her aunt, Sandra Newson. “She did not deserve this.” The family is grappling with the harsh reality that Davis’s daughter will grow up without her mother.
According to police, surveillance footage captured the moment Cross’s vehicle entered the intersection against a red light, colliding with Davis’s Jeep SUV and causing it to overturn. Cross, who was allegedly driving without a license, registration, or insurance, fled the scene on foot but later turned himself in to authorities.
In a statement to police, Cross expressed remorse, claiming he was “dazed and confused” after the crash and apologizing for the incident. His bond has been set at $400,000, with a court date scheduled for September 17.
The site of the crash has become a makeshift memorial, as friends and family left candles, balloons, and flowers in honor of Davis. A vigil was held on Sunday night to celebrate her life and the love she shared with those around her.
Basher Baker, the father of Davis’s daughter, emphasized the profound loss their family is facing. “Tonyque was a wonderful mother,” he said. “She did everything for her daughter, and now I’m left to raise her alone. We want justice for Tonyque.”
As the community rallies around Davis’s grieving family, the case has highlighted the dangers of reckless driving and the devastating impact it can have. Cross’s actions have sparked outrage, with many calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent such tragedies.
The tragedy has left an indelible mark on the Hartford community, prompting discussions about road safety and the importance of accountability. As the legal proceedings unfold, the family continues to seek justice for Tonyque, hoping her memory will serve as a catalyst for change.
