Mother killed, daughter hospitalized after crashing into building on their way to school

A devastating accident occurred near Hancock Park Elementary School in the Mid-Wilshire area on Tuesday morning, leaving a mother dead and her young daughter critically injured. The incident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. near an intersection.

The mother, aged 35, and her 6-year-old daughter were on their way to the school when they were struck by a 30-year-old driver. Following the collision with the pedestrians, the driver’s vehicle then crashed into a nearby apartment building. The mother tragically lost her life at the scene, while her first-grade daughter was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

The driver, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was also hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition. Authorities have not yet determined whether charges will be filed in connection with the accident.

Investigators are currently examining various factors, such as the speed of the vehicle, possible intoxication, and the driver’s motive, as part of their ongoing inquiry. Detectives are interviewing witnesses and requesting any available video footage of the crash to aid in their investigation.

In response to the tragedy, crisis counselors have been made available at Hancock Park Elementary School to provide support for those affected. LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho issued a statement expressing sympathy for all involved in the incident.

Councilwoman Katy Young Yaroslavsky addressed the urgent need for enhanced street safety measures in Los Angeles, citing her own experience as a parent walking her child to school amidst the hazards of speeding and distracted drivers.
