NEW BRITAIN, CT – Authorities are intensifying their search for a third suspect in the tragic death of a 12-year-old girl, Jacqueline Torres. The girl’s mother, Karla Garcia, and her aunt, Jackelyn Garcia, have been arrested in connection with the case.
Law enforcement officials describe the situation as one of the most harrowing cases they’ve encountered. Police Chief Paul Melanson expressed the emotional toll it has taken on investigators, emphasizing that no child should suffer as Jacqueline did.
Jacqueline’s remains were discovered in a plastic storage bin at a vacant house in New Britain. Investigators revealed that she had been subjected to prolonged abuse and starvation, indicating that her death occurred some time ago.
The mother faces charges of murder, while the aunt is charged with cruelty. Authorities are also searching for Jonatan Nanita, Karla Garcia’s boyfriend, who is wanted on murder charges.
Detectives believe Jacqueline died in the fall of 2024 while the family lived in Farmington. Her body was reportedly kept in the basement before being moved when the family relocated in March 2025.
The Department of Children and Families was aware of the family, but further details remain undisclosed. Other children in the household are reportedly safe and unharmed.
Questions have arisen about Jacqueline’s absence from school. New Britain Police Chief Matt Marino stated that aspects of her educational history are under investigation, including her transition to home schooling.
Mayor Erin Stewart assured that the legal system would seek justice for Jacqueline, extending condolences to her family and friends.
Karla Garcia is being held on a $5 million bond, while her sister is held on a $1 million bond. Authorities await a final medical report to confirm the cause of death.
