Mom shoots her 13-year-old daughter in the neck

SEAT PLEASANT, MD – A woman faces attempted murder charges after allegedly shooting her 13-year-old daughter in the neck at their home on Monday afternoon, according to law enforcement officials.

Officers arrived at a residence just before 5 p.m. and discovered the teenager with a gunshot wound. While administering first aid, officers questioned the girl about the incident. The girl initially reported that she had been shot shortly after returning home from school, police documents state.

Upon further questioning at the hospital, the girl revealed that an argument with her mother, Talecka Brown, escalated into a physical altercation. After the fight, the girl began to descend the stairs when she heard a gunshot, causing her to fall and become immobile at the bottom of the staircase. The girl added that her mother instructed her to claim she was shot by an intruder.

Brown, 32, initially told officers that a person experiencing homelessness had shot her daughter and that the girl was already injured when she arrived home from school. However, police noted the smell of a discharged firearm in the house and found inconsistencies in Brown’s statements.

During an ensuing interview, Brown said there was a firearm in the home, kept in a safe, and admitted that it was unregistered and not hers. Following conflicting accounts, Brown eventually confessed she was the only one at home with her daughter when the shooting occurred. As a result, she was arrested and charged with first-degree attempted murder and additional offenses.

The injured girl remains in critical but stable condition at the hospital. Brown is currently in jail awaiting a bond review hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
